Microgreens Triffid Garden

Posted on 27th April 2010 in Cooking, Garden Hardware, Vegetables

For fun things to happen in your garden I highly recommend going away for a couple of days.

I think my plants realise I’m hovering over them, willing them to do things, get bigger, push their way out of the ground, and they wait until my back is turned or my eagle eye is far far away before they go berserk. I really wouldn’t be surprised if they hoik themselves out of the ground when I’m asleep and party on down in the garden.

Impulse Buying

Posted on 23rd April 2010 in Not For Eating

I’ve cross addicted from impulse buying of shoes (I think the fact that I’m currently unable to wear any has played a small part in this) to impulse buying of plants. It’s a cheaper addiction which CCM is pleased about.

My latest impulse buy is a Hellebore Corsica (Helleborus argutifolius).  I recently read about Hellebores on another blog and thought they were strikingly beautiful but didn’t think anymore about them as I wasn’t sure if they’d be available locally.

Nana and My Mother In Law

Posted on 21st April 2010 in Cooking, Herbs, Musings

My Nana and my Mother In Law have many wonderful things in common. The two most important being their skill in the kitchen and their propensity for giving the most amazing cuddles.

Microgreens

Posted on 21st April 2010 in Cooking, Musings, Vegetables

Eating my Rainbow Chard thinnings the other day brought to mind the whole idea of microgreens. I used the thinnings to garnish my homemade pumpkin soup, just plopping the tiny chard into the hot soup without any other faffing. They added a slightly crunchy, peppery texture to the soup. Very delicious!

I Love Lily

Posted on 20th April 2010 in Not For Eating

As much as I dislike cut flowers, what am I supposed to do when I receive some? Send them back and demand a flower with roots, or appreciate the beauty that someone has thoughtfully considered me worthy of receiving?

These are beautiful. Asiatic lilies. Too gorgeous for more words, just look.

Audreys

Posted on 20th April 2010 in Crazy Car Man, Not For Eating

I’ve only ever seen CCM get excited about two plants. The first was his mate ‘Trevor’, a curly leaved croton that used to play with his hair when he sat on the porch. Unfortunately, Trevor died (makes sense really, tropical plants generally won’t handle a mountain winter, and I didn’t have enough sense to put him somewhere warmer), and while CCM quietly mourned, I happened upon my first carnivorous plant, and CCM immediately transferred his affections to the first of the Audreys to grace us with her presence.

Mean Green Mother From Outer Space

Posted on 19th April 2010 in Not For Eating

It was caber tossing, kilt wearing and strong man competitions in Bundanoon on the weekend. Brigadoon had taken over the Southern Highlands and CCM and I (on crutches) were there to smell the haggis and drink the scotch.

My New Garden Hero, Alys

Since I’ve been unable to work for pay with the dodgy ankle, I’ve been spending a fair amount of time sitting on my posterior watching gardening programs. This is both good and bad. Good because I’m learning, and bad because what my ballet teacher from years ago said is true – things you sit on get bigger. Hmmmn.

Bruise Update

My daily photo of the busted ankle (on the toilet seat – the white of the seat makes a lovely, accessible, neutral backdrop) shows some excellent colour development.
