I’ve always been fond of my fine-boned ankles. They look pretty in high heels and I’ll never be accused of having ‘cankles’. They’ve given me some trouble over the years, but nothing like the trouble I’ve had in the last two months.

The Armchair Gardener
Passion
I really really love something for nothing. Especially when the something is an unexpected and potentially beautiful botanical surprise.
Spring 2009 I bought a ‘Nellie Kelly’ Grafted Panama Red Passionfruit vine. I planted it in the ground, against the fence behind my tomato plant, and kind of forgot about it as I knew I had to wait until the following season in order for it to get established and produce fruit.

Pubs For Pixies
My garden sometimes seems to be a smorgasbord for snails. I planted 15 marigold plants not too long ago and I now have one – yes one – left. I’m almost too scared to put any more vegies in the vegie plot, because I don’t know if I can handle the pain of decimation by snail. It’s like they’re eating my children!

Many From One
It’s sometimes the oddest things that trigger knowledge. I bought a bromeliad for some reason, I can’t remember why or where from, I probably just thought it was interesting and bought it on a whim without knowing much about it. I know I thought it was pretty cool that you watered it down the centre cup type thing (and that is the technical word for it), and I kind of liked the way the actual word ‘bromeliad’ tripped off the tongue, like rolling a fine red wine around your mouth (come on, who am I kidding? The only fine wines I know are the ones that are 25 percent off!).

Over The Rainbow
This growing season I’m growing a bunch of things specifically because I’ve never seen them to buy in the shops, or because I have no idea how they look as a plant.
I read a lot of gardening forums (nerd, I know) and many people talk about Rainbow Chard (or Swiss Chard). About how beautiful it is in the garden and how tasty it is in the kitchen. I had no idea what it was, but after a little research I realised it was the pretty sister of Silverbeet. I know Silverbeet, I thought, I ate it as a kid, it’s good with butter and pepper. How much cooler would it be to have one that’s a kaleidoscope of different colours?

How Did The Obsession Start?
I was thinking about this today whilst working away in my garden. It’s only been in the last 2 years that the obsession has really reared it’s ever present, undeniable head.
The desire to grow things has been there intermittently for many years – in fact, I think my utter dislike of cut flowers stems directly from this obsession with growing. When you think about it, who wants a gift of a cut flower? Here you go, have some death. Let me carry some death down the aisle as I’m getting married. You’re in the hospital recovering from major surgery, let’s fill your room with death. Surely the only time cut flowers are appropriate is at a funeral?

The Beginning
I’m just like the proverbial crazy cat lady, except my obsession is my garden, not some fuzzy, four-legged, hair shedding machine.
And just like the crazy cat lady, I assume every one I talk to is as interested in my obsession as I am.
