A Wee Tour of England

Crazy Car Man and I had a wee whirlwind tour of Merry ole Tingland this weekend just gone.  It was lovely weather, sunny with just a hint of cloud, a little sun shower followed by a rainbow, and a frisky little breeze.  Without a doubt shorts and t-shirt weather.

Sounds pretty much like a February weekend in England, right?

Mr Hestalow Would Be So Pleased

Posted on 11th February 2011 in TAFE

Mr Hestalow was my maths teacher in my final two years of high school. He was also the Principal of my high school and so was a figure of fear for some and awe for others. I liked him because he let me wear my Doc Martin boots even though they were absolutely NOT school uniform.

Of my 12 units of study for my Higher School Certificate* I did 2 units of maths because I had always perceived myself as not being very good at it. I would have opted for maths for dummys (which was also 2 units, but much easier) except my Dad had a lot more faith in my abilities than I did and insisted I do hard maths rather than easy. I was terrified. I only passed maths in year 10 because the girl I sat next to who went through the marking for one of our major test papers didn’t point out to our teacher that he had added my score incorrectly, and my mark of 53 should have been 49. Looking back, maybe there was a reason why I was so crappy at maths.

I’m Awesome at Growing Corn

Posted on 6th February 2011 in Chickens, Field at the Front, Update, Vegetables

I’m not actually. I suck very very badly at growing corn. I had such high hopes when I planted the first batch of seed only to watch all 100 of them washed out of the soil by mega rain. That didn’t deter me – I live by the adage ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’ – so I tried again, planting a slightly smaller batch of 60 seeds, most of which lived to grow into kind of healthy looking corn plants.

They produced those thingys at the top that hold the pollen and they produced the thingys at the bottom that have the silks. The fact that the gales kicked in and the rains smashed down just as these two thingys eventuated should have been beside the point. I assumed it was a wet and wild ride for corn mating but I also assumed the deed had been done.
