Roadtrip 2011 Part 1: In Which We Camp

Posted on 8th May 2011 in Bugs, Cooking, Crazy Car Man, The Bush, Travel

We’d packed up the ute with all the camping accoutrements we thought we would need, in a fashion some would call haphazard and we would call as organised as Crazy Car Man and Crazy Garden Lady can be.  With grins of anticipation and only an hour behind schedule we hit the road.  Roadtrip 2011 had begun!

The Good, The Sad and The Freaky

I would love to be a lady of the land – in much the same way that I’d love to be the lady who ate all the pies – but in both instances I don’t think my heart could handle the strain.

Farming is for the strong and for the gamblers. Or maybe the ability to gamble comes first and the strength is merely a subsidiary skill. Either way, so much of the process is left, quite literally, in the hands of someone else. In this instance, Ma N, who we all know is going through a bit of a tanty phase. And my goodness, is she not screwing up a lot of livelihoods right now?

Fleeting Gardenia

I grew this gardenia and I was amazed – AMAZED -  when it gave me flowery smelly goodness.

Garlic Snails

Posted on 12th December 2010 in Bugs, Crazy Car Man, Just Stuff, Vegetables

I know that a plate of snails swimming in garlic butter is a delicacy in some countries, and it is something I do plan to try at least once in my life – merely as payback for the things of mine they have eaten – and while I knew that garlic and snails went together really well, I didn’t know they went together really well.

Summer and the Cicada Army

Posted on 14th November 2010 in Art, Bugs, Just Stuff, Musings

I’ve always loved the song of the cicada. It’s the herald of summer and subsequently all the good things that come with the rise in the mercury. When I was a kid it was 6 weeks holiday from school, Christmas and the accompanying bag of books that Santa so thoughtfully gave me, the thought of being able to secret myself away in one of the many hidey-holes I had to eat homemade iceblocks and read one of the books from the bag, of nights so humid and hot I couldn’t sleep and so my 6 weeks holiday seemed twice as long.

Crazy Car Mon-et?

Posted on 28th October 2010 in Art, Bugs, Carnivorous Plants, Crazy Car Man, Update

My camera is pretty good, but it sucks severely at certain jobs. It’s a Sony Cybershot point and shoot digital piece of wonderment that my folks gave me about six years ago. It takes a great photo for an amateur camera – all the photos on my blog (unless otherwise credited) are taken with my Sony, and being the luddite that I am, there’s no tweaking or airbrushing – partly because I don’t know how to do it, and partly because I can’t be bothered. The camera has traveled through 21 countries with me and the Man and has never put a foot wrong.

When The Wind Blows

Posted on 16th October 2010 in Bugs, Crazy Car Man, Foreign Lands, Musings, Not For Eating, The Bush, Travel

I woke up this morning in the most horrible temper. I’d been kept awake most of the night by the howling of the wind, which put me firmly on the wrong side when I swung myself out of bed.

I hate the wind. A frisky breeze can be a most pleasant thing, but when it goes from fluttering the tendrils of my hair to blinding me with said hair and bombarding my blind self with the howling of a thousand ghouls, it’s no longer a pleasant experience and is more akin to fingernails being dragged down a chalkboard.

Weird Science in the Garden

Posted on 26th September 2010 in Bugs, Carnivorous Plants, Crazy Car Man, Porch Garden, Update

Every now and then my Inner Science Geek escapes the fairly loose leash I keep it on and weird science in the garden is the result.

I haven’t mentioned my bevy of carnivorous beauties lately, winter is their dormant period and as a result they’re not looking their best – and like all true supermodels they absolutely refuse to appear in public looking less than hot. Prima donnas, the lot of them!

The Ants Go Marching….

Posted on 24th August 2010 in Bugs, Carnivorous Plants

The ants go marching one by one HURRAH HURRAH

The ants go marching one by one HURRAH HURRAH

The ants go marching one by one

The little one stops to suck his thumb

And they all go marching down inside the plant

I remember singing this song in primary school and it immediately came to mind when I saw this….
