The Great Winter Tomato Hoax

There is nothing better than a cheese and tomato sandwich, on really fresh bread, with salt and pepper. Even just writing about it makes me crave one.

Crazy Car Man doesn’t agree. In his opinion, until very very recently, the only thing a tomato was good for was making tomato sauce. And he has a point – in the shops, tomatoes are crap. In fact, in his opinion, tomatoes come in a close second to his most hated fruit, known as The Fruit of the Devil (seriously, he says it in capital letters), the dreaded pineapple.

1.52pm

Posted on 24th October 2010 in Armchair Gardening, Chickens, Fruit, Just Stuff, Kingswood, Vegetables

Saturday morning was so hot I pulled the gardening shorts on for the first time since May.  I sent up a warning flare first so people in the vicinity could put their sunglasses on before looking at the legs directly – it is akin to looking at the sun, the glare will leave leg shaped black spots before your eyes for days afterward.

The shorts and I zoomed up to the nursery to buy some potting mix, as some of the tomato seedlings are requesting an upgrade to business class, and on the way there I spotted the cloud.

It was black.  It was roiling.  It was moving in fast.  It looked angry and like it might have some hail to throw on my cars and my garden.  The nursery folk were outside pulling the lettuce seedlings undercover, always a bad sign, so I threw some money on the counter and a couple of bags of potting mix into the boot and headed home like the hounds of hell were on my heels.

The Last Day of The Second Last Month of Winter

Posted on 31st July 2010 in Chickens, Crazy Car Man, Fruit, Herbs, Not For Eating

It is with great relief that I farewell the second last month of Winter.  Only one to go and then The Season That Should Not Exist will be over.  And not a moment too soon.  My soul is crying out for some hot from the sky (hot from a heater is a terribly poor substitute).

Today was a lovely mid-winter day though.  While Crazy Car Man was off playing with fire trucks (he’s a volunteer for the Rural Fire Service) I spent a satisfactory couple of hours playing in the garden.

Interlopers and Weird Things

Posted on 16th July 2010 in Fruit, Not For Eating, Porch Garden

I get up close and personal with each of my plants at least once a week.  I like to have a quick chat and catch up and see how the universe is treating them.  Some get a little more face time either because they’re right in the house or porch or simply because they’re more interesting.

I’m now quite grateful my plants can’t read otherwise there could be a mass exodus of plants with poor self esteem.  Come back!  You’re beautiful and fascinating and I love you all!

Lessons From My Landlord

Posted on 4th May 2010 in Fruit, Herbs, Musings, Vegetables

My landlord – Nick The Olive Man – is awesome. He’s an ancient Italian who came to Australia in 1953, worked his wee butt off ever since and now owns half the village in which we live. Our cottage and my garden are a tiny portion of the property on which he lives, has a billion olive trees and runs 150 free range chooks, owned, nurtured and chatted to by Marge the Chook Lady.

It Lives – A Success Story

Posted on 2nd May 2010 in Fruit, Update

I did a little happy dance in my garden this morning.  I find it so joyful when something I experiment with works.  It makes me feel like I may actually be learning something, and can possibly refer to myself as a gardener without people laughing at me!

Passion

Posted on 12th April 2010 in Fruit, Not For Eating

I really really love something for nothing.   Especially when the something is an unexpected and potentially beautiful botanical surprise.

Spring 2009 I bought a ‘Nellie Kelly’ Grafted Panama Red Passionfruit vine.  I planted it in the ground, against the fence behind my tomato plant, and kind of forgot about it as I knew I had to wait until the following season in order for it to get established and produce fruit.
