Weird Science in the Garden

Posted on 26th September 2010 in Bugs, Carnivorous Plants, Crazy Car Man, Porch Garden, Update

Every now and then my Inner Science Geek escapes the fairly loose leash I keep it on and weird science in the garden is the result.

I haven’t mentioned my bevy of carnivorous beauties lately, winter is their dormant period and as a result they’re not looking their best – and like all true supermodels they absolutely refuse to appear in public looking less than hot. Prima donnas, the lot of them!

Pah, I Spit On Your Sunshine

Posted on 8th September 2010 in Armchair Gardening, Not For Eating, Porch Garden, Update

When I got my Hellebore and then researched it (yes, I do tend to do these things a little wonky, most folk would research and then buy, but this is my way of rebelling against societal norms – buying plants as a social statement, how punk rock of me) I discovered that these little beauties will live quite happily in a shady position.  So mine got the five star shady treatment, a prime position in the Porch Garden, with bright light but no direct sunshine.

The Garden Nerd Taught Me Stuff

Posted on 9th August 2010 in Just Stuff, Musings, Not For Eating, Porch Garden

I like nerds.  I like talking to them.  They tend to have an awesomely intricate knowledge of a subject reinforced by copious amounts of passion and enthusiasm.  I like to wallow in the nerdery, feeding vampire-like on their enthusiasm, sucking up whatever knowledge my little brain can compute, tucking away those useless pieces of information for the next trivia night.

Interlopers and Weird Things

Posted on 16th July 2010 in Fruit, Not For Eating, Porch Garden

I get up close and personal with each of my plants at least once a week.  I like to have a quick chat and catch up and see how the universe is treating them.  Some get a little more face time either because they’re right in the house or porch or simply because they’re more interesting.

I’m now quite grateful my plants can’t read otherwise there could be a mass exodus of plants with poor self esteem.  Come back!  You’re beautiful and fascinating and I love you all!

Introducing the Porch Garden

Posted on 31st May 2010 in Carnivorous Plants, Not For Eating, Porch Garden

My porch – or conservatory when we’re stroking it’s ego – is the home of my favourite and most special ornamental plants.  Some were gifts, some were impulse buys, some I know the name and provenance and others are a complete mystery.  On nice days I sit out there and talk to them, and on days like today when the ‘cyclone that isn’t a cyclone just really crappy weather’ hits, I go out there because I have cabin fever!
